The Indonesian Esperanto community joyfully invites foreign Esperantists to participate in the first Indonesian Esperanto Congress, 5-8 April, 2013 in Bogor. One of the goals of the congress is to spread knowledge of Esperanto in the city; the other is to help Esperantists from the whole country meet one another and create a national association. The Indonesian Esperantists hope to welcome Esperantists from abroad as well. The lernu! team regrets to inform you that lernu! tutor Josef Shemer (Josis^), from Israel, has passed away. Josi was only 61 years old; during his recovery from a complicated surgery, he took a sudden turn for the worse and passed away. Josi volunteered as a lernu! tutor for many years, and has worked to support the Esperanto movement in general for many decades. Josi will be missed; the lernu! community sends its sincerest condolences to his friends and family.

On February 11th, the 4-week intensive Esperanto courses at "Esperanto Island" in Hainan, China, came to an end. The event included a 200-hour intensive BEK course for beginners, a 144-hour pedagogical seminar, and two courses under the auspices of the University of Esperanto. A total of 130 people participated, coming mostly from Asian countries (China, Mongolia, Korea, Taiwan, and Japan) but there was also a couple dozen Esperantists from Europe and Australia. The event was organized and the BEK course was taught by Dennis Keefe, who planned the courses with the help of the local Esperanto association and the Chinese branch of ILEI. A new tool has been developed to teach the language and knowledge of colours. It's a multi-coloured paper puzzle in the form of a ball, which can be put together and taken apart. It shows how colours change from one to another, and their brightness, saturation, and nuances. The puzzle is a learning tool regarding combination of colours and how to talk about the characteristics of colours. Kolormondo is useful to art students, clients of publishing studios, and advertising designers. It's a fun game for children as well as being an attractive decoration.

New language website from the creators of lernu!

Education@Internet, the organisation behind the lernu! website, has launched a new website for learning the Slovak language. The project is still in a testing phase and under construction, but it already contains a great deal of interesting information: free courses, a grammar of Slovak, dictionaries, and games. And in the upcoming months, the content will continue to grow and improve. If the project is successful, similar sites for other languages may be created in the future.

Instead of the usual three week duration, NASK will offer a short seven day intensive Esperanto course during the week of the 4th of July holiday (July 2-10, 2011). This change was made in order to accommodate students that might not have enough time or money for a longer session. The place—the sunny campus of the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) remains the same. Everyone, from age 16 to 96 (or more!), from all over the world are welcome! A shorter and less expensive non-credit session allows more flexibility in the activities. Due to the Monday holiday, Americans will need to be off only four days (five days for non-Americans)—you can arrive on Saturday, July 2nd, and depart on July 10th! Each participant will have their own private room in a four-person suite, with three meals a day, in the International House apartment complex. The restaurant and the classroom are located nearby. You can learn Esperanto in depth and even have time to celebrate U.S. Independence day with fireworks in the nearby town La Jolla! Birke Dockhorn from Germany, Bertilo Wennergren from Sweden and Lee Miller from the U.S. will teach different levels of formal classes every day, with informal activities in the afternoon and in the evening. Hoss Firooznia, assistant teacher, will organize excursions and non study related events. At least one lesson per week will be offered. The first one will take place on wednesday, january 12th, at 5:30 pm (Paris hour), and the goal will be mainly introducing oneself and saying what one expects from the class. The teacher will teach Esperanto in English and in French. Now PEJ has launched a contest for photographs of its products! The "Wikipedia Month" contest is a new collaboration between E@I and the Esperanto community on Wikipedia. It uses prizes as incentives to motivate wikipedians to write and improve articles on selected important topics, and to appreciate the good work of the best contributors. The project also aims to attract new authors to the free encyclopedia. The contest is taking place over the whole month of April 2010, and valuable prizes will be awarded to the best authors. Any registered wikipedian can participate in the contest - just revise and improve one or more articles from the proposed list of 1000 topics, and add your name to the list of competitors. Individuals can also propose that a topic be added to the list, to encourage writing about a specific topic. The organisation behind lernu!, E@I, is now working on a new project – Lingvohelpilo (Language Helper), a grammar checker for Esperanto. The main goals of Lingvohelpilo are to: - grammatically analyse and check texts in Esperanto; - mark and comment on errors detected; - offer pedagogical clarification and advice. The first two goals are the same as for most spell and grammar checkers, but the third goal makes Lingvohelpilo a tool not only for language checking, but for language learning as well! A new collection of short stories, Marvirinstrato, is now available for free download and free dissemination under the Creative Commons license. The website where you can find the collection is www.marvirinstrato.com. The collection is available in several formats -- PDF, RTF, HTML, and MOBI (for Kindle and other electronic books). Three stories in Marvirinstrato received prizes in the "Prose" branch of the Literature Contests of UEA (3rd prize, 2005; 2nd prize, 2006; 1st prize, 2007). Others received prizes in the LIRO and MUZO contests, and several were published in Beletra Almanako, Fonto, and Literatura Foiro. Many dictionaries at lernu! have few words in them, and even in the dictionaries for the "large" languages, many words are missing. For some languages, lernu! doesn't even have a dictionary. That's why we're asking for your help. Even a beginner can help us improve our dictionaries; anyone who has a dictionary, or who speaks Esperanto well, can help. Have you planned your summer yet? If not, there's time to do it. This year, July 10th to 18th, at the same time as Somera Esperanto-Studado (SES), the second gathering of lernu.net users, creators, and helpers will take place in Slovakia. As usual, there will be Esperanto courses at various levels in the mornings, and workshops, contests, lectures and games in the afternoons, and various entertainment in the evenings. It will also be possible to take international Esperanto certification exams. After the event, everyone is invited to travel together to Internacia Junulara Kongreso (IJK), which will take place in Czech Republic right after SES. So you'll have a chance to learn Esperanto (or improve your skills) and immediately use the language during one of the most popular traditional Esperanto youth events!

PSKK is the fall meeting of FLEJA (Flanders Esperanto Youth Association). During the After-Summer Chat Meeting (PSKK), participants can enjoy some last summer activities, and begin to celebrate the winter ones. You can exchange photos, tell a story, give a talk, etc. Some traditional program items during the annual meeting are a dance course by Bart Demeyere and Heidi Goes, and a guided tour of the city or community where PSKK is taking place. The Greek version of a new Esperanto textbook for beginners has been published. The book, which already exists in almost 15 languages, was written by the Slovakian teacher and Esperanto activist Stano Marĉek. It contains 114 pages, is abundantly illustrated, and is suitable both for self-study and for use in classes. The book is apparently the first published Esperanto textbook for Greek speakers in the last 20 years. As you have probably already noticed, there have been some changes in the system for sending responses to tutors in the courses "Ana Pana" and "Ana Renkontas". Now you can look at an introduction for each tutor and choose your own tutor, not only from speakers of your language, but from all of the available tutors. In most cases you can have the same tutor in both correspondence courses. Inactive tutors automatically disappear from the list of choices. We hope that you like the new system! Comments and suggestions for improvement are very welcome.

Calculation system for activity changed

The way in which we calculate lernu! users' activity (which can be between 0 and 5, and is shown by little pictures of Zam) has been changed to be less strict; that is to say, with the same number of visited pages, you will now reach a higher activity in the scale. The previous calculation system was more appropriate when every lernu! page required that several sub-pages be downloaded. This no longer occurs to the same extent.

From January onwards, you will be able to choose what personal information in your profile you want to be visible to anyone, what should be visible to no-one, and what should only be visible to lernu! users that you have placed in your list of "Friends". You can also show your date of birth independently from your year of birth, and if you have selected that your birthday information should not be visible to other users, your name won't be shown in the "We congratulate..." section on the front page.

The three-week intensive Nord-Amerika Somera Kursaro (North American Summer Courses), NASK, will take place once again in Brattleboro, Vermont, between the 3rd and the 21st of July, with Esperanto courses in three levels.
