How can I help?

There are many ways to help lernu!, and among them there is certainly also something for you, the reader of this page. Just look through the list below and contact .

  • Translation - if lernu! isn't available yet in your language, you can begin to translate it, and if there is already a translation in your language, you can help with translation checking and updating. You can help with translation even if you haven't mastered Esperanto yet, but in that case, we ask that you write to us about that. Or else, you can read our wiki page for translators.
  • Tutoring - tutors do one or many (according to their preference) important tasks for the site. They check course correspondence for their languages' lernu! users, answer their questions and comments (or translate them so that others may answer), guide virtual lessons, and/or moderate national language forums. If you would like to help with one (or more) of these tasks, please follow these instructions.
  • Dictionary Editing - the dictionaries are one of the most used parts of lernu!, but the stock of words is still very meager for several of the languages in which lernu! can be used. If you would like to help with the improvement and enrichment of the lernu! dictionaries, or perhaps allow us to use a word list you have created for another purpose (with translations between Esperanto and another language), that would be great! In that case, visit the wiki page for dictionary editors.
  • Programming - the primary programming techniques used at lernu! are PHP (with some Smarty), JavaScript, Perl, and Flash. If you have extensive experience with these languages, and/or with XHTML and MySQL, we would be very glad if you wrote to us.
  • Content - a primary part of every learning environment is, of course, content, and at lernu!, the content has become very rich thanks to the contributions to hundreds of individuals. If you have instructional materials, good quality sound files, pictures, films, and so forth, that are useful for learning Esperanto or informing people about it, and if you would like to permit (thousands of) other lernu! users to make use of your materials, please send them to us! (If your materials are aimed only at teachers of Esperanto, a better place to publish them is at Edukado.net, but if it can be adapted for use by both students and teachers, why not publish them in both places?)
  • Testing and checking - even the best programmers, translators, and writers of content sometimes make mistakes, so it's important to test and proofread new (and old) sections of lernu! carefully. You can do this by simply using the site and sending us comments (for example, using the link at the foot of every lernu! page). However, if you wish, you can also contact us and become a tester, helping us check parts of the site that have not yet been released to the public.
  • Design - lernu! needs many pictures and drawings. It's more pleasant to read text will illustrations, easier to understand grammar or learn new words when explanations are also illustrated, many buttons could be more attractive, many pages more intelligently laid out... If you are inspired to help us make lernu! more attractive, you're welcome to!
  • Publicity - understandably, we would be very happy if everyone who wants to learn Esperanto knew about the existence of lernu!, and if those who don't know about Esperanto yet could learn about it. Because of that, we created a collection of different informational materials that you can use if you want to help advertise the site. We would also love to hear about your experience with publicizing Esperanto, if you are inclined to write to us about it.
  • Ideas and comments - finally, we should underscore one last time the importance of your reactions to everything concerning lernu!. We can't always react immediately, but that doesn't mean that we have forgotten or are ignoring what you wrote to us. It could be that your ideas will be included in a plan of work for the next step in the evolution of lernu!, but it could also be that (especially if many other users have the same opinion), they will be implemented earlier. You should send your opinion of individual pages or parts of lernu! using the comments link at the bottom of each page. You should send your general opinion of the site using the survey (for more detail) or the guestbook (for less detail). Thanks!
