Frequent mistake

Faulty sentence: "Mi ne havas la eblecon tion fari."
Correct sentence: "Mi ne havas la eblon tion fari."

Short explanation

Many people use "ebleco" when they actually mean "eblaĵo" (= "something that is possible"), due to the influence of their native languages, among other things. In this case, one should use "eblaĵo", or even better, the shorter form "eblo". There are, however, instances, when the word "ebleco" is correct, for example:

La ebleco ke pluvos morgaŭ estas granda.

"Ebleco", there, means "a grade or measure of how possible something is". Note that the short form "eblo" can have both meanings; both "eblaĵo" and "ebleco". Therefore, if you are hesitating between "ebleco" and "eblaĵo", it's safer to use the form "eblo", which is always correct. So say:

• Mi ne havas eblon fari tion.
• La du ebloj de morgaŭa vetero estas pluvo kaj nuboj.
• Ni havas multajn diversajn eblojn.
