Capitalization

Explanation

There aren't any mandatory rules about capitalization in Esperanto. Use of capital and lower-case letters helps primarily in the clarification of texts. In Esperanto, you usually use capital letters:

1. to indicate the first letter of each independent sentence;
Mi vidas hundon. Ĝi estas granda. - I see a dog. It is big.

2. to show the first letter of a proper name;
Mia nomo estas Adamo. Mi ripozis ĉe la Balta Maro. - My name is Adam. I rested at the Baltic Sea.

3. in some acronyms;
PIV - Plena Ilustrita Vortaro. - PIV - Complete Illustrative Dictionary

4. to emphasize some word or phrase;
Mi VOLAS, sed NE POVAS fari tion. - I WANT, but CAN'T do that.

5. To show special respect;
Dankon pro Via letero. - Thank you for Your letter.

In all other instances, lower-case letters are usually used.
