In Esperanto, the same punctuation symbols are used, as in other languages. Most often we use these symbols: period (.), comma (,), semicolon(;), colon(:), exclamation point (!), question mark (?), periods of ellipsis (...), hyphen (--), dash (-), quotation marks (" "), and parentheses (()).
The punctuation symbols are usually used to facilitate understanding of the entire text. There aren't any strict rules about the use of punctuation. You should use them the same as in other languages. However, it's recommended to keep good style and always take care, that the text is easily legible. Excessive use of symbols of punctuation, or completely ignoring them, doesn't make a good impression and is sometimes even annoying. In a word, everything is suitable, that doesn't cause misunderstanding and/or facilitates understanding.
