The third part of the book Fundamento de Esperanto is entitled:
| EKZERCARO | de la lingvo internacia « Esperanto » |
In 1894, Zamenhof wrote this comment about the exercises:
Up to now, in our language, there had only been dry grammars and dictionaries (...). Whoever wanted to learn our language had to either learn the grammar and a dry mass of words, or get a book written in our language and translate it with the help of a standard dictionary - a book for systematic learning, for practising, did not exist. But only a few people have the patience to learn by searching for each word in the dictionary; this made learning the language difficult and unpleasant (especially for those people who, not speaking the main European languages, had to look up every word in the dictionary while learning).
The "Ekzercaro" consists of 42 paragraphs of systematic exercises in our language; under every paragraph, the words and grammatical forms found in that paragraph are given with translations in French, English, German, Russian, and Polish. The "Ekzercaro" gives every beginner, from whichever of the aforementioned countries he derives, the ability to easily and systematically learn our language.
As you have seen, the original version of the "Ekzercaro" has a translation in five languages. At lernu!, there are translations in more languages. In addition, the translations in French, English, German, Russian, and Polish don't match perfectly with the original translations, due to the fact that the languages have changed somewhat in the last 100 years.
In the following pages, you will be able to go through the exercises of the "Ekzercaro". We have added sound, so that you can listen to all texts. In addition, you can practice the words using the word learning module and the fill-in-the-blanks exercises.
